Client Filters
Client filters screen jobs based on the client's track record on Upwork — their rating, hire rate, and how established they are. They help you avoid clients with a poor history, while still giving newcomers a fair chance.
Quality Thresholds
Minimum Client Rating
Set a minimum rating, from 0.0 to 5.0 stars (up to two decimal places — e.g. 4.58). Clients below this threshold are filtered out.
Leave empty to accept all ratings.
Minimum Hire Rate
Set a minimum hire rate, as a percentage (e.g. 50%). Clients below this threshold are filtered out.
The hire rate is the percentage of a client's past jobs that resulted in an actual hire. A low rate often signals someone who posts many jobs but rarely follows through.
Leave empty to accept all hire rates.
New Client Exception
New clients on Upwork often have no rating, no hire rate, and few past jobs — not because they're bad clients, but because they haven't been around long enough. These two settings control how upHunter handles them.
Include New Clients
Default: ON
When ON, new clients bypass the rating and hire rate filters entirely. When OFF, all clients are held to the same standards regardless of how long they've been on Upwork.
New Client Threshold
Default: 3
Defines what counts as "new." A client who has posted this many jobs or fewer is considered new and bypasses the quality thresholds.
The posted job count is used because it's the most reliable signal for how established a client is. Without it, the rating and hire rate filters would silently skip new clients who simply don't have those stats yet.
With the default of 3:
| Jobs posted | Status | Filtered? |
|---|---|---|
1 | New client | No — bypasses rating/hire rate |
3 | New client | No — bypasses rating/hire rate |
4 | Established | Yes — rating and hire rate apply |
How Matching Works
- If "Include new clients" is
ONand the client has posted threshold or fewer jobs → the job passes immediately (rating and hire rate are not checked). - Otherwise, the minimum hire rate is checked (if set).
- Then the minimum rating is checked (if set).
A job must pass all applicable checks to be sent. Each filter is independent — set only the ones you care about, leave the rest empty.
Tips
- Start with just a minimum rating (e.g.
4.0) to filter out clients with a poor track record - Keep "Include new clients"
ONif you don't want to miss first-time posters - Hire rate is especially useful for avoiding clients who post many jobs but rarely hire
- Setting too many client filters at once can significantly reduce your job volume
